Summer is here, and so naturally it is time to think about money! The City and Borough of Juneau will vote on our annual budget tomorrow, and the Legislature has less than two weeks to get a budget passed for the State.
Also, Tongass Democrats committee work is starting to heat up, so read on for details. Meeting locations, dates, and times below the fold.
The Strategic Planning Committee will be meeting soon, but the time and date are TBD as of press time. So, if you are a member, please watch your email and the TongassDemocrats.com calendar to keep up with this important work!
If you are interested in joining the Strategic Planning Committee, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, and I will connect you to the Chair, Edric Carrillo. Apologies for the extra step, but I forgot to ask permission to post his email address. Alternatively, you can attend our next meeting (July 6) and meet him in person.
Week of Kindness volunteers will be hearing from the co-Chairs in the next week to get started! As a reminder, we will be running a toiletries drive for Front Street Clinic the week of August 7 – 11; if you would like to be involved, please email Mary at email@example.com.
If you have already volunteered to write for the website, you’ll be hearing from me today (Sunday). If you haven’t volunteered, but would like to do so, you can email Mary at firstname.lastname@example.org to talk about it.
City & Borough of Juneau Assembly and Committee Meetings
This week, there are three meetings on the official CBJ Assembly calendar. The agenda for Monday’s meeting in particular has a lot of interesting items, including the annual budget vote, alcohol at Eaglecrest, the building code, supplemental funding requests, and the mill rate.
On Monday and Wednesday, it looks like some 15 board vacancies are going to be discussed as well. Assembly Chambers are located at 155 S. Seward Street.
** Note that some agenda links are directly connected to documents that you’ll be asked to save and others will take you to a separate page.
- Jun 5, 6:00 PM – Assembly Human Resources Committee, Chambers (agenda)
- Jun 5, 7:00 PM – Regular Assembly Meeting, Chambers (agenda)
- Jun 7, 5:00 PM – Full Assembly sitting as the Human Resources Committee, City Hall Conference Room #224, immediately followed by Special Assembly meeting for board appointments
Agendas and additional information can be found at the CBJ Agendas and Minutes page.
Alaska State Legislature
As of publication time, the Legislature’s official public testimony page is empty. Looks like both houses of the Legislature are adjourned until Tuesday June 6; their calendar is here.
Last Friday, I got my layoff notice, which stated:
As you know, the legislature has not passed a budget to fund state functions for the fiscal year starting on July 1, 2017. Because we do no have a state budget, we must let you know of a possible government shutdown on July 1, 2017.
So, you might want to keep an eye on the Legislature’s public testimony page, as things might get more active there soon. Either way, if you know people up north, tell them that their Senator needs a phone call about doing his/her job and getting a budget done! Here’s information comparing the House and Senate versions of the budget.
In the event that there is a public testimony opportunity, but you can’t attend in person, contact your Legislative Information Office for assistance.
Please note that all of that the information in this post is believed to be accurate at the time of publication, but things might change. When they are available, I’ve included links to official websites so you can double check.
I hope you have a great week (even if you also got a layoff notice),
