The Tongass Democrats’ Year of Kindness event for Front Street Clinic officially happened at the beginning of August. Our largest drive, organized by The Amazing Jenny and staffed by her and other volunteer Democrats, was at Foodland IGA during the week of August 7th. They collected hundreds of items and nearly $1200 cash that was used to purchase loads more.
Jenny and others also collected donations at work, and many Democrats stepped up and bought or donated supplies on their own. After the August meeting, we had bag upon bag of donated socks, not to mention all the reading glasses and travel toiletries!
So what I’m saying is: You done good, Tongass Democrats, in every sense of the word.
I was the lucky person who got to drop off six boxes of supplies and inform the Clinic that we had also raised almost $1200!
Laura Lucas, who coordinates care for patients, confirmed that the Clinic would prefer to have us purchase even more supplies, rather than drop off cash. So, an employee counted the cash out with me, and I placed orders for 400 pairs of reading glasses, dozens more pairs of socks, and hundreds of hand and foot warmers.
Amazon says these should arrive next week.
Every staff member at the Clinic was incredibly gracious and grateful for the work we put into this drive. Thank you all for participating and making this happen!
One more chance to give
Our last collection drive will be at the Annual Democratic Picnic this Sunday at Sandy Beach.
The Clinic’s current items of most need include new-in-package:
- socks (especially wool ones for the upcoming cold months),
- waterproof winter gloves, and
- travel-size tubes of healing lotion.
We’ll have a final tally of everything at the September meeting.
Thanks again, Tongass Democrats – you’re the best!
