2020 House District Caucuses Tomorrow (Saturday April 18)

Tongass Democrats and Friends,

I hope you’re all staying healthy and safe during these confusing and unprecedented times. For those I have not had the chance to meet yet – my name is Edric Carrillo. I serve as the Chair of the Tongass Democrats, the regional party organization for Juneau, Gustavus, Haines, Klukwan, and Skagway.

I am reaching out to remind you about our Virtual Caucus happening tomorrow from 4 – 6 pm, and to explain how you can participate.

Caucus Schedule

Our four-year House District Caucuses are going virtual this year. At these caucuses we usually discuss district-specific issues, make suggestions for the state party plan and platform, and elect district officers and delegates to the Alaska Democratic State Convention (May 15-16).

This year, due to the number of virtual District meetings, we will limit the caucuses to election of district officers and delegates to the state convention.

As a reminder House District 33 includes Skagway, Haines, Klukwan, Gustavus, downtown Juneau and Douglas. House District 34 includes Mendenhall Valley, Auke Bay, and Out the Road.

The times for the virtual meetings are:

District 33: 4 to 6pm
District 34: 4 to 6pm

Our agenda tomorrow will include:
1. Elect State Delegates: Each District has a set amount of delegates HD 33 (27 delegates) HD 34 (21 delegates)
2. Elect District Officers: Chair, Committeeman/woman, and Young Democrat (35 and under)

How to Participate in the Caucus

If you have not registered yet you can do so here – please sign up in advance to attend your virtual House District! In the form, you will be asked what your House District is. If you don’t know your House District, you can look it up by entering your address on the Alaska Legislature’s Who Represents Me? service, which is located at the bottom right of this webpage. Note that it’s asking for your home address,  not your email!

After you enter your home address, your house district will be that listed under your House Representative.

After you click Who Represents Me, you’ll get a result like this

if you live in House District 33.

As you can see we’re all represented by Sen. Jesse Kiehl. Jesse produces lovely birthday cards to all his constituents. I would be remiss to mention that it is his birthday today – happy birthday Jesse!

Back to caucus business… You can also choose to run for district offices when registering for the caucus: Chair, Vice-Chair, State Central Committee Member, Young Democrat (35 or under), Secretary, Treasurer or Delegate to the State Convention (May 15-16). You must be a delegate to the State Convention to qualify to be a delegate to the National Convention.

Once we have processed your registration we’ll send out a link and phone number to either participate online or telephonically.

How the Caucus Tech will Work

The caucus will be hosted through Google Hangout – so I don’t think you’ll have to download anything, just approve access to mic or webcam if you want to be able to talk.

We will either be doing electronic voting through google docs or a simple voice vote. Our District Chairs Monte Brice (HD33) and Willie Anderson (HD34) will be running the caucus. I’ll be online for HD34 along with Will Kronick our TD Treasurer in HD33 to help folks connect with us.

You must be registered as a Democrat to vote in the caucuses or to be a district officer. You can change your voter registration here.

We hope you can join us, but even if you can’t, please think about becoming a monthly donor! https://secure.actblue.com/donate/tongassdems

Thanks for all your support and see you tomorrow!
